Bottom line, if variety doesn't matter to you too much and you just want to hop in a locomotive and drive, this may be your best bet. Which is sad I might be playing it every day if I could. So it's mostly rotted unplayed on my hard drive for the last few years. Once I had done everything and got bored with what I initially bought, I just could not justify paying what they were asking for more. I'm talking like $30 for a single route or even locomotive, even on sale. It comes with little to no content, and any additional content must be purchased through idiotically overpriced DLCs. The Dovetail Train Simulator you mentioned is probably the most widely played, but I personally can't recommend it.

There are options, but unfortunately not too many.
